The Southern Climate Impacts Planning Program (SCIPP), a NOAA Climate Adaptation Partnerships (CAP) team, is thrilled to announce a 10-week summer internship opportunity for Sophomore and Junior students at the University of Oklahoma during Summer 2025. The goal of this internship is to provide students with hands-on work experience while supporting local organizations in addressing weather and climate challenges. This is an opportunity to apply your skills in a professional context and build valuable experience for your resume.
SCIPP’s Focus: SCIPP works across the four-state region of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. We concentrate on addressing weather and climate concerns including severe storms, floods, hurricanes, and extreme temperatures, and work to improve communities’ abilities to plan for, absorb, recover from, and successfully adapt to the adverse effects of these events, both now and in the future.
About the Internship: SCIPP is offering up to 8 paid internships that will be hosted throughout the four-state region of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. Students will help organizations tackle specific needs related to weather and climate, such as: developing strategies to address vulnerabilities to extreme weather or climate change, collecting data to assess risks, improving how weather and climate effects are incorporated in city or organization plans, developing messaging to help a community prepare for extreme events, etc. In the application form, students are asked to rank their preferred internship options based on their skills, interests, the internship site location, and the overall needs of the organization. SCIPP will then match the student to the host organization for the internship (see Figure 1 for a timeline of the application process).
Please note that this is an in-person internship, and students will be expected to attend on-site.
Position: Student Hourly
Locations (several options):
- Arkansas: Russellville, AR
- Louisiana: New Orleans, LA and Shreveport, LA
- Oklahoma: Miami, OK and Oklahoma City, OK
- Texas: Dallas, TX and Austin, TX
Availability: Must commit to a minimum of 8 weeks. Up to 10 paid weeks are available. The exact start and end date will be set by each host organization, but the internship will occur within the May 12, 2025 – August 15, 2025 timeframe.
Compensation: $20/hour; 40 hours/week.
Logistics: Please note that a separate housing stipend is not offered. The student is responsible for securing housing, but SCIPP’s Program Manager will assist in exploring options, and some host organizations may also help with finding local housing opportunities. Note that the student is responsible for all additional costs, such as food and transportation.
Education Requirement: Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. While preference will be given to students enrolled in the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences, we welcome applications from students in any department or college.
Skills and Abilities: A strong interest in climatology is preferred, as well as an interest in climate outreach and education. Some of the preferred skills for the internship include GIS, climate data analysis and/or synthesis, report writing, logistical coordination, social media support, and data entry. Strong communication skills are required for this opportunity.
