The central research question for this project was: How does the urban signal on precipitation vary between cities in the south-central United States? The research centered around three objectives: First, the determination of cities for analysis and the identification of urban precipitation signals; second, the characterization of rainfall patterns within and around these urban areas as a function of storm movement; and third, a synoptic analysis of atmospheric mechanisms responsible for enhancing or diminishing the urban precipitation signal. A general methodology for these three objectives was developed and an extensive literature review on urban impacts on precipitation was completed. Results from a pilot study in the Dallas/Fort Worth region were also presented at a national conference.
