SCIPP recently partnered with the City of Shreveport to host an Extreme Weather and Resilience Workshop. During this two-day workshop, SCIPP team members and city leaders discussed the various weather-related risks impacting Shreveport, potential preparation and response tactics, and mitigation opportunities.
Shreveport indicated concern for heavy precipitation, extreme temperatures, and damaging winds. On the first day of the workshop, participants learned about these hazard trends and the potential risks associated with them. Day two of the workshop built upon this knowledge and included discussions about hazard planning and mitigation strategies. Attendees were introduced to SCIPP’s tools and research relevant to these hazards, including the Simple Planning Tool for Climate Hazards v2.0, the Temperature Trends Dashboard, extreme heat and precipitation research, and other relevant tools and information. Mitigation and adaptation strategies for multiple hazards were also included in subsequent discussions.
Through the two-day workshop, the SCIPP team was able to establish a connection with the City of Shreveport and foster discussion about the hazards they face and ways to become more resilient to them. SCIPP aims to continue collaboration with the City by providing additional information and analysis and discussing funding options for mitigation efforts. These efforts may improve Shreveport’s resilience to climate hazards and reduce threats to life and property.
