
Dr. Mark Shafer received a 2025 Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Award for Superior Professional and University Service and Public Outreach
The nomination committee summarized his contributions as the following: Dr. Shafer has worked to catalyze sustainable human-natural systems through climate services. He has outlined key areas of climate services, as related to policy needs, for the broader U.S. climate services community, working with the American Association of State Climatologists, American Meteorological Society, and others. Shafer has worked extensively in all aspects of climate services—improving the quality of historical data archives, facilitating access to climate information, enhancing local capabilities to provide climate services, integrating diverse data sources, and expanding the knowledge of the climate-environment-society interface. His work has made communities more resilient to climate hazards.
